Vallandigham, Clement Laird
(1820-1871) Валлэндигам, Клемент Лэйрд
Юрист, политический деятель. В 1845-47 член законодательного собрания штата Огайо от Демократической партии [Democratic Party]. В 1858-63 член Палаты представителей США [House of Representatives] от штата Огайо. В период Гражданской войны [Civil War] в политических кругах Севера заслужил репутацию главного критика политики федерального правительства по отношению к Конфедерации [Confederate States of America]. Выступал против сильной центральной власти, боролся за расширение прав штатов [states' rights] и против освобождения рабов, проповедовал идею превосходства белой расы [white supremacy]. Возглавил фракцию "медянок" [Copperheads 3., Peace Democrats]. В 1863 был осужден военным трибуналом за предательство и выслан на Юг [Vallandingham Incident]. Вернулся в США в 1864, сделал несколько безуспешных попыток переизбраться на политический пост.
